Milk Crates and Turntables. A Music Discussion Podcast
Ep. 174 - Music News
Well, here we are, episode 175, 176. There's a little gap there somewhere between the YouTube channel and the podcast platform. 175, 176, maybe 177. At this point it doesn't matter. Anyway, I'm back. Took a little hiatus, had to take care of some business back home in Boston, but I'm back and yeah, it's just me tonight flying solo. So I think I'll do some music news, what the hell? And yeah, that's it, music news. Sit back, relax, relax, enjoy the show, enjoy me reading you the news. And there's some crazy shit in there. I don't understand these people sometimes, but yeah, that's rock and roll.
Speaker 2:Enjoy five four three. Five four three.
Scott McLean:All right, let's get into some music news. What do we got? I saw one earlier that I wanted to see. Well, first of all, didn't didn't kiss retire, then they're never going to retire. So this article is kiss to perform live at 50th anniversary celebration show. How old is this article? First of all, I want to make sure this is right March 22nd, kiss is set to return to the stage in the first live performance in two years after their huge money grab retirement tour. Am.
Scott McLean:I even on the screen right now. Am I even on the screen? Let me see I'm supposed to be. Oh my God, this is a fucking disaster right now. Let's turn to that music. Listen, what the fuck is that? Oh my god. Alright, and now I totally lost the page I was on. Let's see. Alright, here we go. Ah, fuck this music, fuck it all, get off.
Scott McLean:Kiss is set to return to the stage for their first live performance in two years. According to an email sent to the followers of a recent updated kissonlinecom website, the group will perform an unmasked live show oh great, as part of a three-day Kiss Army Storms Vegas event. They just can't give it up. These fuckers can't give it up. They won't give it up. They areers can't give it up. They won't give it up. They are just in for money grab after money grab, and you know what the Kiss fans will go. That's the thing they're going to go to this shit. And it's the same shit they're just older, without makeup. So where's the show? Where's the show without the Kabuki makeup? And the fire and the blazing guitars and the drum, the big fucking gong on fire and all that. What's the show right? Isn't that why you go see Kiss, isn't that the reason is to see the stage show? No, they're going to do a strip down because they think I wouldn't go If I had a free ticket. I wouldn't go to this garbage. The event is scheduled to take place November 14th through 16th at Virgin Hotels in Las Vegas.
Scott McLean:In addition to Kiss unmasked performance on it says unmaked. You know, that's a whole other thing. There's no such thing as an editor anymore. Nobody edits this shit Like unmaked. Back in the day, a reporter, a writer, had this shit checked. No, no, not here, not in this. You know what? I'm going to try this again. Let me see if this, now that I'm kind of customized, let's go here. See if that blows it up. That's a little better Now we can see it.
Scott McLean:Kiss could conclude their nearly four-year-long end-of-the-road farewell tour. Four years, four fucking years, they've been doing an end of the road farewell tour. They'll be back. They'll be back. Yeah, and this is why it says but band founders gene simmons and paul stanley were always careful to leave the door open for future special shows. Nah, nah, kiss fans celebrate Dressed to Kill album with New York City Expedition. Nah, nah, enough of Kiss. Let's get back. Let's get out of them. Let me see what else we got news I saw something about. Let me see what else we got news I saw something about. Let me see Gene Simmons defends charging fans $12,000 to be his roadie.
Scott McLean:Would you pay 12 grand to be Gene Simmons roadie? Like really, ah uh. Perry Dedevich says, even though the AI, brody. Like really, perry Dedevich says, even though the AI, even though it'll be mostly backing tracks, yeah, yeah, paul Buccia, celebration Day, led Zeppelin, that's all that's going to be. It's all it's going to be is backing tracks, but they'll still pay. But would you pay $12,000 to be Gene Simmons' roadie? Let's see what this guy, what this guy. Do you really think Gene Simmons would back down after being publicly roasted for offering fans a 12,495 roadie for a day experience on his upcoming solo tour which, by the way, there's an article somewhere in here that got delayed and I guarantee it has to do with ticket sales that all of a sudden got delayed? How would you, why would you pay 12 grand, almost 12 and a half grand? And what's the 495? 12,495, what? What is that? Like 1999, like you can get this for 1999, not 20 bucks? Well, think again. He's not backing down.
Scott McLean:The kiss star doubled down on the idea in a new interview, saying he was inspired by remembering his own questions while attending shows as a child. What's it like being on stage when they're performing and seeing the audience from the stage? Simmons explained to the New York Post. I decided you know what, nobody's ever done it, why not? You know what? No, nobody has ever sold being a roadie for a day for $12,495. That's what nobody's ever done. I'm sure there has been bands throughout time that have said said hey, you know, you want to come in, you can help set up. You know, here's my king roadie, he'll take care of you. And then the roadie bitches that this new guys just do it. And that's what happens, right? No, this dude is going to charge you to to get bossed around. Pretty much that's it is. He's going to charge you to get bossed around. Pretty much as it is. He's going to charge you to get bossed around.
Scott McLean:The five-figure fee does include, of all things Simmons mentioned above breakfast at the hotel, helping assemble the stage, accompanying Simmons to his various promotional meetings for the day, get introduced to the crowd during the concert and take home an autographed bass Fucking kidding me and I'm sure that is a very low-end bass guitar. I'm almost sure of that. That guy don't give anything away. That guy don't give anything away. Uh, let me see important note the deal does not include an actual ticket to the show. What the fuck? As they are sold through the individual venues, that motherfucker, for 12,495 dollars. He can't buy you a ticket out of that money. Like he can't get you a ticket even if you don't need it because you're a roadie. But you get the ticket. You get a fucking ticket. You put it in a shadow box. Check this out. You put it next to the bass guitar. It's just a fucking ticket. Get the worst ticket in the house, but no, doesn't come with a ticket for $12,495. This is not for everybody and it ain't cheap. Simmons, oh shit, really Really, but you are motherfucker.
Scott McLean:Simmons said of the offer in a separate interview with Buffalo's WIVB, placing some of the blame for the high cost on the need for insurance. It's also a different world than when I grew up in. Nowadays, if you get a paper cut, everybody gets sued. Well then, fucking have them sign a waiver. What do you mean insurance? Have them sign a waiver that this is a contest. I paid to do this. This is out of my goodwill. I won't sue anybody. I don't care if a fucking speaker falls on my head and crushes me. I won't sue. It's all in the waiver. No, no, this is. This is what I said at the beginning of the intro. Some crazy shit.
Scott McLean:Let me see the Gene Simmons Band. This is what kills me. Kiss doesn't tour anymore, but Gene Simmons does with his band. Who's going to see the Gene Simmons Band? Okay, they're playing in Peachtree City, georgia, at the Fred Amp. Beaverdam, kentucky, at the Beaverdam Amphitheater. Yeah, I'm sure that's a big venue.
Scott McLean:Red Bank, new Jersey, has anybody heard of any of these places so far? At Basie, that's probably a fucking club. May 6th, at Montclair, new Jersey. At Wellmont Probably another club. Bethlehem, pennsylvania, shithole, wind Creek Casino there you go. May 9th, huntington, new York he's not going, far as you can see, the furthest he's going is south. Is Georgia, right? Let me see Huntington, new York. The Paramount, a theater. Uncavesville, connecticut. Mohegan Sun I guess that's a place. Northfield, ohio, mgm they're all casinos. He's playing casinos. Pretty much. That's where he's playing. Sturges, south Dakota, at the Buffalo Chip on August 3rd, he's playing casinos. Oh boy, oh boy. Alright, well, good luck to him. Good luck. Let me see what's this one say Watch Bruce Springsteen and Flea play Because the Night in New York City.
Scott McLean:How about not? How about we don't watch that? Uh, john Fives. John Five is a great guitarist, by the way. If you've never heard of him, he's, he's kind of a uh, a hired gun guitarist. He played with Marilyn Manson for a while. Uh, I believe he's with Rob Zombie now. Amazing, amazing guitar player. I've seen him play a couple times. And let me see. John Fives failed. First attempt to get Gene Simmons. This must be Gene Simmons night on Milk Rates and Turnitins. Let's see. John Fives said he would spend five hours on the hunt for an autograph from Gene Simmons, then, at the last moment, decided not to take it. The incident took place when the future Motley Crue guitarist and Motley Crue, yeah, once Nick Mars was kicked out of the band. The guitarist was around 13, 14 years old and Kiss were playing Detroit one night in the early 80s.
Scott McLean:I wanted to meet my heroes and I was waiting at the fucking Punk Dehera train hotel, I don't know. Five to a recent interview I'm this little kid skipping school, kind of preppy and all that stuff, and I'm the only one in the lobby. He identified the correct hotel when he saw tour buses parked outside and the scene was to become familiar to him. I was waiting there all day, all day, he said. He recalled, thinking hopefully he'll come down and have something to eat or get coffee, who knows, with one of the guys. That's more or less how it went. So here comes Gene Simmons. He's walking out of his bus, into the hotel and I had my originals booklet. I said Mr Simmons, mr Simmons. And he walked right by me. I'm this little kid. He said Five wasn't going to give up though. And he gets in the elevator and I was like, screw this. So I get in the elevator too. And he's standing there and I have my booklet and my little marker.
Scott McLean:Soon came the moment that made them the day so memorable. The elevator opens to his floor and he goes you want me to sign that? And I go no, it's okay, it's that great it's. It says nah, fuck it. True story, I don't know what it was. I was just like so upset, I was no threat, I was just a little kid. I was waiting there for like five hours. And he goes you want me to sign that? And I was no threat, I was just a little kid. I was waiting there for like five hours and he goes. You want me to sign that and I was like, no, it's okay, then the elevator shut. That's pretty cool.
Scott McLean:That is actually a pretty good story. Five will be inviting fans to enjoy his massive collection of classic era Kiss memorabilia with the Knights in Satan's Service Museum. Well, there you go the Knights in Satan's Service Museum. I wonder what that's all about. All right, let's see. What else do we have in the news going on here? Let me see Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings planning a 2026 Guess who Tour. Really, would you go see them? Would you go see them? I don't know. I don't know if I would go see Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings today for a Guess who tour. I don't think so. Here it is right here. This fucking guy too. This guy, bob Dylan, launches 2025 tour in Tulsa. Here's his set list Bob Dylan launched his 2025 tour on Tuesday night in Tulsa, oklahoma, home of the Bob Dylan Center.
Scott McLean:As with previous tour legs, dylan did not allow cell phones inside the venue. I will give this guy credit for that. All this guy credit for that. All praise to him for that. That's great. I mean, I'm guilty of it. I've really tailed back on it when I go to concerts using my cell phone to record it, and you record shit that you don't really watch again. A complete set list, however, can be viewed below Through.
Scott McLean:Dylan's song selections were similar to previous legs of touring. Though Dylan's song selections were similar to previous legs of touring, one notable difference was in his band lineup. Drummer Jimmy Keltner has been replaced by Anton Fig, who has worked with Dylan before, both in studio and live. He also worked with artists like Paul Simon, john Bonamassa, peter Frampton, mick Jagger and many more. Let me see, go see Aaron Lewis if you get the chance. I saw Aaron Lewis. I saw Stained back up Korn, so I've seen him. He's an interesting cat live when he's on a solo tour.
Scott McLean:And Aaron Lewis is the lead singer of the 90s band Stained and you know they're good. They had a little moment there in the 90s. He's a temperamental motherfucker. I'll tell you that. Uh, let me see. Where else will dylan perform this year? I I don't know, but I don't. I don't really want to read all of that. So here's a set list all along the watchtower. If that is not the worst version of an original song and you know he wrote all, and this is one of those conversations that's endless he writes all along the Watchtower. Jimi Hendrix does it and does it so much better. Jimi Hendrix made that song famous.
Scott McLean:If you hear the version of Bob Dylan's all along, watch how you'll be very, very disappointed, very disappointed. It ain't me, babe. I contain multitudes, false prophet, when I paint my masterpiece, black Rider, my own version of you. To be alone with you crossing the Rubicon, desolation Row, key West, philosopher Pirate watching the river flow. It's all over now, baby blue. I've made my mind up to give myself to you, mother muses. Goodbye, jimmy Reed. Goodbye Jimmy Reed. Every Grain of Sand. So that's his set list. That's a set list that's for hardcore Dylan fans. I know, I think two songs In that whole list, because, well, I'm not a fan, so it would be Meaningless to me.
Scott McLean:Oh, let's move on down. Let's load some more articles here. I like these. They're short and sweet. Elton John names the worst thing that can happen to a new act, I don't know. Oh, here's one for you, this old piece of shit. And I'm just going to say that because, well, this is an old woman that's made her money and now just decides she wants to say, after she made all this American money, all this big American money, millions and millions of dollars, american money, nancy Wilson, hot, nancy Wilson says she's embarrassed to be American. Yeah, there you go. Yeah, and here's how Nancy Wilson is not afraid to share her displeasure with the current state of America During a recent conversation with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Scott McLean:Yeah, that hard-hitting, worldwide-known newspaper, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Now I've heard of papers being called the Journal, the Wall Street Journal, and I've heard of papers with Sentinel, the Washington Sentinel. But Milwaukee has to have a journal Sentinel. Think of that. What idiot. What Milwaukeean, what stupid Scantzen idiot says we're going to make ours a journal Sentinel, milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Scott McLean:The Hot Guitarist noted that the group's 1975 hit Crazy on you was inspired by one of the most tumultuous times in US history. We were kind of embarrassed at that time to call ourselves American because of the dirty politics of the Vietnam War, wilson said, adding that the tune still resonates In 2025. Yeah, to be as subtle as possible, it's more embarrassing to be an American. Now, again, she's got her millions and millions and millions of dollars, tens of millions of dollars. She doesn't care. So she runs her mouth. But you know what it is with these people, with celebrities and you know. So she runs her mouth. But you know what it is with these people, with celebrities, and you know politicians ex-politicians for that matter it's about their ego. So, once the money isn't an issue, like George Clooney is a perfect example the guy sold his tequila company for, like I don't know, fucking $500 million or something. Like the guy doesn't need the money, but when you attack his ego, when you attack their ego, these people's ego, that's where it hurts them. You know they're in these bubbles, but then when they step outside the bubble and people are like fuck you. They're like what, what? How dare you? How dare you say that to me? Well, yeah, fuck you. I'm going to report the news. So I'll continue to read this, although I really don't want to. I'll just go put on CNN and MSDNC and see what they say.
Scott McLean:Wilson's perspective isn't just about politics. She also sees rapid sexism and misogyny in today's culture. Wait, wait, I think she's four years too late for this. Wasn't this a thing in 2021, 2020, 2022, that whole misogyny? She had a rock and roll band. She was the head of a rock and roll band.
Scott McLean:Okay, this one right here sold out her fucking sister. All right, you want to talk about bullshit, sexism and misogyny? You sold out your sister when? Because when mtv wanted to make a video and your sister was too fat, as they told her not my words. They had to cover her up in these big go. Look at these 80s videos with heart. Ann wilson is all covered up and they only show her from the neck up the shoulders up, because she was too fat for videos. And this one her sister went along with it. So what's up with that? Right? But she wants to run her mouth, her pompous ass, and say, oh, america is sexism and misogyny in today's culture. Yeah, nah, you're bullshit.
Scott McLean:She thinks people forget that stuff, or she forgets it until someone reminds her. But when you live in the millionaire bubble, people don't say that shit. But this one, yeah, yeah, I said it, I don't forget. Uh, he says, uh, this just gets even stupider. The echoes, uh, that echoes another of hot's most famous songs, barracuda, you know. So let me see, uh, people, there will be people that will not.
Scott McLean:So all their money right now, as little as it trickles in, right, the trickle-in effect of, say, spotify. The trickle-in effect is they get supposedly cents on the dollar for when a song is played. But when you look at these songs and some of them have over a million downloads, a million plays, well, that's, that's a lot of money. That's a lot of money for these people. Now you're gonna get people that will go and to their spotify page and they'll see crazy on you and barracuda and maybe they don't play any of their songs anymore.
Scott McLean:Maybe 77 million people say you know what you can say, you don't play any of their songs anymore. Maybe 77 million people say you know what you can say you don't like Trump. You can say you don't like Republicans or conservatives or the far right or the extreme right or whatever you want to, the MAGA people, whatever you want to call us. That's fine, fine. But when you dog the country, when you say you're embarrassed to be an American, how many people do you think, when they see this, are going to just like me and say you know what? Done, done, I'm a music guy too. Done, you know, I will never download. If I hear it on the radio, I'll just change it because there's so much more. Just on general principle. Just on general principle.
Scott McLean:There's a lot of bands that I don't agree with. Their politics rage against machine, pearl jam, I I mean the list goes on. I still listen to them. I still listen to them because I have yet to hear them dog the whole country and say they're embarrassed. But the last time somebody said they were embarrassed to be America was those Dixie chicks, that little blonde mouthy one, and they paid a radical price for that one that destroyed them. Then they tried to come back as the chicks. They had nothing else. That absolutely stalled them.
Scott McLean:But this old bitch, she's, she's not going anywhere. She's trying to stay relevant, but she's like three years, four years behind on this sexism and misogyny. And you know, blah, blah, blah. Uh. Barracuda is even more relevant in the salacious billionaire culture with the grab them by the pussy mentality. Wilson declared these songs will be there long after we are gone.
Scott McLean:Yeah, see how she didn't mention millionaires, right? See how they didn't mention millionaires, right? Do people get that? No, she can't dog her own people, right? No, has to go after. Now it's the billionaire culture. Yeah, you know how many billionaires there are and you know how many billionaires are democrats. There's more democrat billionaires than there are conservative billionaires.
Scott McLean:So what else is this, this blonde? She's a blonde and I don't care what you say, ladies, if you're listening, I don't care. If you know me, I'm on a roll, so just let me go. Let's let me go. I love my woman, though I love my woman, despite her disappointment with where America is today. Wilson added that she sees change on the horizon. Oh, we're going to end this on a good note, I think. For women in the culture the pendulum will come back again and there'll be another renaissance in the arts to push back against the oppression of the cranky old, rich white guys. She noted, this is, you know, she's single, by the way. This is probably the reason I hope I'm alive to see the next revolution. Was there ever a revolution? I don't know. I think the revolution was in the 60s, when they were burning their bras. Now, that was a movement. I just wish I was old enough to really appreciate it, if you know what I mean. Okay, yeah, enough of her, enough of her.
Scott McLean:Ronnie Spector what is this article? I don't know. Rock's greatest front women let's get on this line. Let's get on this line. Let's get on this rabbit hole. According to VCR Classic Rock Culture. It's a good website.
Scott McLean:Rock's greatest front women let's see Number 25, kate Pearson from the B-52s. I'll give her that. Number 24, ronnie Spector of the Runettes, probably this high in the list. I should say this low in the list because the Runettes didn't have a long career and Ronnie Spector really got screwed by Phil Spector where she couldn't play any of her songs. He owned the rights.
Scott McLean:April Bernard called me an ass kisser. I am. I love my women. You know that. Big head Todd the Wet Sprocket says Nancy Wilson can move to Ireland with Rosie. Let me see Perry Denevich. The AI said Nancy Wilson looks like she hasn't slept in months and won't sleep for four years. That's good, I like that. Let me switch over here for a second. Let me get caught up on these chats. I don't know what's going on. I guess that's all it is right now. Okay, there should be more Hide chat overlay. No, I don't want to. All right, I'm not getting no nancy. Yeah, all right. Let's see ronnie specter, number 24, number 23 on the all-time best front women. Uh, suzanna hoffs from the bangles. You know she looks good, she. She looks very good for her age. She aged well, but she is crazier than a fucking sprayed roach. That one, yeah, fucking la la land, she's crazy. If you ever watch her videos, like her Instagram videos, she's nice to look at. She's a beautiful older woman, but cuckoo, cuckoo, cuckoo.
Scott McLean:Yeah, she's out there. Oh, Nancy is the ass kisser. Okay, april Bernard, not you Nancy. I get you. All right, let's get down to number 22. Donna Sparks Donita Sparks from L7. Was never a fan so can't really speak on them. I knew who they were. Number 21, karen Carpenter Well, if she's 21,.
Scott McLean:How did they put this? Surprised to see soft rock queen Karen Carpenter on our list. You shouldn't be.
Scott McLean:The Carpenter singer was a singular talent with a pure, emotive voice and drumming chops to boot. She was an amazing drummer. Paul mccartney called her the best female voice in the world, while elton john described her as one of the greatest voices of our lifetime, and they are both correct, absolutely. Uh, cheryl crowe, john lennon, kim gordon and madonna are among the many other famous musicians who have sung. Carpenters praises as a singer, performer and songwriter.
Scott McLean:Sadly, more than 40 years after her death, she tends to be forgotten. However, her impact and the legacy should never be overlooked. That's right, you know what? So this is that syndrome, that AM radio syndrome, as I call it. They were everywhere, like they were all over the place, and AM radio like pfft, that's all they played.
Scott McLean:Carpenters, carpenters, along with all that other. You know the soft rock of the 70s and they just became oversaturated and they weren't cool. So there was that big crossover time April Bernard says nevertheless got the credit she deserved, as she should, as she should, you're right. But there's that crossover now. It was like when. It was like when grunge like I always say, grunge killed lover boy, and that's a very. You can take that as a, you know a comparison, but you know what I mean by that. The Carpenters just got swept up in that soft pop rock, you know pop radio, like when the shit started changing and FM popped up. And then, you know, okay, they'd be on certain types of stations but they were just looked back at as square and not cool and, you know, totally over in their image, was just like so squeaky clean, never taking the time to listen to their songs in their songs for a while. And I I believe I'm not wrong in saying that there's a bunch of people that will be listening to this that will say that the carpenters were a guilty pleasure where you'd play them by yourself or, you know, maybe with a friend, but for the most part no one would ever say, oh, karen Carpenter was a great lead singer, not in the 80s, not in the 90s, not in the 2000s Years after she died, you know, is when she started to really and her music will live on forever.
Scott McLean:It's a matter of fact. It's a matter of fact. Let a matter of fact, let me see if I can do this. There's a great uh, it's a good segue. So I I've been kind of going down rabbit holes of I love like ambient music and and stuff like that, and everyone knows I like techno and let me see, here it is. Listen to this. This is from an artist called Clark and I stumbled into this. This is speaking of the competence. Let me play this. I'm gonna get a copyright hit for this, but I don't care, I'm gonna play. This is just a great version for this, but I don't care, I'm going to play. This is just a great version of this song Brought into the modern era.
Speaker 2:How haunting is that?
Scott McLean:Right, this is the Carpenter song. Superstar, how great is this version? I don't know. You gotta like this. It's ominous. This is one of those songs I'll play. I'll just keep repeating it like three times in a row when I'm driving. This is what I've been listening to lately. I've been listening to a lot of this type of music and again I'm going to get a copyright hit on this in us is such a sound of fire.
Scott McLean:I love that synth. I love that synth. I love that synth. What a great version of that song. And I stumbled into that, like because I go down these rabbit holes with music and I will sit there sometimes for I don't know an hour, sometimes two hours, and just go down these rabbit holes of genres of music and I will just skip song and I'll just listen. If I don't like it in the first 30 seconds it doesn't catch me. I just move on. Boom, boom.
Scott McLean:Then you hear that song and I heard this and I was at first I was like what, this sounds familiar, like this song sounds familiar. I didn't even really look at the name. I looked there. I said superstar, wait a minute, that's uh, that's the carpenters. And then I, that's the, that's, this is a remake. And I was amazed and how cool it was and how this, like I said, very haunting, a very haunting version of that song.
Scott McLean:That song in itself is kind of it's kind of a sad song. But all right, moving on. Let's see what else. Uh, carrie, number 20 on the best. Uh, well, according to vcr magazine, uh, best front women. Uh, carrie brownstein, sleater, kinney I don't know who that is, so I'm gonna move on. Uh, belinda carlisle, belinda Carlyle, oh, we're not doing 25, I guess, but okay, belinda Carlyle. Number 19 the late great Dolores O'Riordan from the Cranberries. Yeah, that's a horrible story. That's a horrible story how she died. They figured out she drowned in her bathtub. Yeah, sad, kim Gordon, sonic Youth at number 17. I agree with that. She's about where she should be.
Scott McLean:Number 16, kathleen Hanna from Bikini Kill. I've heard of them, not really a fan of that type of music. Oh, here's my girl, shirley Manson from Gobbage. She's at 15. Yeah, shirley Manson, what a great stage presence she had when I saw her live. She absolutely controls the stage, there's no doubt about it. She has command and control of the crowd, the stage presence. She is a true rock star.
Scott McLean:Shirley Manson, susie, sue, I always you know what. So Susie and the Banshees, that's an interesting group to me. They were a big part of the New Wave movement in the 80s. They were a big part of the new wave movement in the 80s. But for the most part, I hate, I hate, I hate their version of Dear Prudence. I was like what a shit song they did with that. They had a couple of good songs.
Scott McLean:I was kind of a fan from a distance, but not really Like caught up in them. She just happened to be the female amongst all those bands that came out around the Clash and all those bands that came out. Who else were we at? Karen O from the yeah yeah, yeahs. Okay, Gwen Stefani from no Doubt what the fuck? I saw her live and she wasn't that impressive. She, she did the same thing the whole show. She's up there with her half shirt on and her sweatpants her cool sweatpants and her white sneakers and her cute ass self. You know she is adorable and but she just always put this pouty, like I'm just a girl, look on her face and like she just did this, this thing. It was just not. I was like come on, just be a fucking rock star. You know, it just wasn't impressed. She didn't impress me. She didn't impress me. But okay, uh, kim deal from the breededers. Okay, kim Deal, she's the real deal.
Scott McLean:Boston girl Grace Slick, legend At number 10. Legend, ah, my girl, I love Courtney Love. I always loved Courtney Love. I don't care when she's bad. When she's bad, I love her more. Courtney Love is a fucking rock star, that's all there is to it. She lived like a rock star. She is just and live through this, their album, their second album from Hole. It's one of the best albums of the 90s, of the whole decade. It's one of the best albums of the whole decade. Yeah, as a matter of fact, let me see. Let's let me see what I got here.
Scott McLean:I know, I have some, alright, let's do. I love this song. This is a great song. This is whole. This is one of my favorite songs. This is in my top 50 favorite songs and it's whole Courtney Love. The song is called Malibu.
Speaker 2:Great song Crash and burn. All the stars explode tonight Great song. How'd you get so desperate? How'd you?
Scott McLean:stay alive. Great song. It's called Malibu.
Speaker 2:Burn the sorrow from your eyes. Oh, come on, be alive again.
Scott McLean:Rockstar.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Scott McLean:Courtney loves a rockstar. You know there's so there's a lot of talk that said she didn't write her lyrics and she didn't do this and she didn't do that. And I would probably say that Kurt Cobain had a lot to do with writing that. The lyrics to the songs on the album live through this. But, with that said, she's still a rock star. She's still a rock star. She's still a rock star. She's crazy, crazy, crazy. All right, let's move on. Number eight Joan Jett from the Runaways. Okay, joan Jett's a rocker, she's a hard rocker. Still is Still doing it. Still doing it. Still looks like a 12-year-old boy, you know, with makeup on, not that I would know what that looks like. I'm assuming, people, I'm assuming. Don't judge me, don't just saying, I'm just saying she's never really built like a woman. Woman, I better move on.
Speaker 2:I say someone.
Scott McLean:Ah, chrissy, chrissy, chrissy, number seven on the list of breast best breast. Was that a Freudian slip? Breast front 25 breast front women was that what? Yeah, chrissy Hines, she's one of the breast front women. Of course she is. Yeah, let me see. April says you said whenever was bar she was better, when she was bad she was better. Yeah, chrissy Hines, legend, legend, although although when she was on tour, she wants like $ 300 a ticket so that ain't happening. Uh, joan is a greedy person. Um, yeah, I'm not paying three. I saw them at the orpheum theater in boston, uh, the beginning of their second uh, you know stage of the pretenders. They were great, she was great, but I'm not paying 300 cents. I love it.
Scott McLean:Another one of my childhood. I had a huge four foot by three foot poster of Debbie Harry on my wall when I was a kid and I'll just leave it at that. Just going to leave it at that. Okay, don't think beyond that, that you don't need to, but oh, yeah. So there was always the question debbie harry or pat benatar? That's a question that's like is it gravy or is it sauce? Right, ketchup? No ketchup, debbie Harry or Pat Benatar. I was in team Debbie Harry. Let me see Another one, absolutely beautiful, beautiful woman I think Annie Lennox at number five.
Scott McLean:Annie Lennox was just so, so unique, still is, still is a beautiful older woman, beautiful older woman, as all of them are, all of you are. Annie Lennox was just so unique in how she looked and she owned it and she created it and she nurtured it and even when she dressed in that kind of androgynous David Bowie type thing, still hot, hot, hot, as the late great Busta Poindexter once said hot, hot, hot, yeah. Let me see, as the late great Buster Poindexter once said Hot, hot, hot, yeah. Let me see On number four oh, this guy, this guy, how did he get on the list? Wait a minute. How did this guy, janis Joplin, get on the list? This is for women. What Is this one of these new? Is this one of these new? Is this one of these DEI? Things Like Janis Joplin should be on the men's list. That's a guy. I don't care what anybody says, she got voted best looking guy on her in her college. They voted the best looking. So this dude should not be on, should not be on the list, especially at number four. That's like that dude. That was the swimmer called himself. I guess his name was John Joplin before he changed it to Janice, so I'm just going to go right by him, that dude. He pops up everywhere. Alright, there you go.
Scott McLean:Tina Turner, ike and Tina Turner yep, no doubt. Saw her live. Saw her tear it up in 1997 in Albuquerque. Great show, great show. Uh, cyndi Lauper backed her up. Cyndi Lauper, another one just shut up and sing total horror show, total diva, for no reason, but you've heard those stories. Uh, number two ann wilson. I like ann wilson better than nancy wilson, that's for sure. After the beginning of this show, yeah, ann Wilson. Okay, but unfortunately for Ann Wilson, I might not be listening to heart songs anymore, unless if Ann Wilson came out and said I love America. Well then, you get me back. You get me back, but sorry, ann, your sister ruined it for you. Don't siblings do that though? Don't? They ruin everything?
Speaker 2:Look, at siblings, they ruin everything.
Scott McLean:And number one on the list, stevie Nicks from Fleetwood Mac. Well, okay, you can go with that. You can go with that. I don't think there's an argument here. Nope, so that's your list. That's the top 25 according to VCR. Let me see. Do I want to do one more? It's been an hour.
Scott McLean:I fucked up the beginning of the show. I've been away for three weeks. You got to bear with me on these things. I got to get it, but I like doing this. I like reading you guys the news. It's fun. I don't need Jack, this guy.
Scott McLean:I'm going to end it on a low note. This guy hasn't performed since 2020, right, this clown show, this vaudeville act? David Lee Roth set second 2025 concert date. What's he releasing them like? Once a week? This is great. This is typical of this egomaniac. Like I said, the more I look back at David Lee Roth in the 80s, the more I say, yeah, I was drinking a lot, because he wasn't really that cool. We would just like to believe that he's actually a douche.
Scott McLean:David Lee Roth now has two shows scheduled for this year, marking his first time performing since, like I said, 2020. It was previously announced that on May 3rd he'll appear at the M3 Rock Festival in Columbia, maryland, may 3rd. He'll appear at the M3 Rock Festival in Columbia, maryland, approximately four months later. Roth will play the Mountain Winery in Saratoga, california. Yeah, for a bunch of billionaires. Though an official announcement has not yet been made, information via the venue's site confirms pre-sale tickets will be available March 25th Gee, sorry, I can't make it. Followed by regular sale on March 28th. Yeah, I can't make it. There's also no word on who will perform in Roth's band.
Speaker 2:There you go.
Scott McLean:There you go. Yeah, you know I'm going to play, but I don't really have a band yet. But you know, because you know nobody really wants to play with me. Let's finish this up. Last time Roth gave an official performance was when he opened for kiss on march 10th 2020 at the united supermarket arena, supermarkets arena and lubbock, texas. The following year, roth announced that he planned on throwing in the shoes and retiring after a run of farewell shows in las vegas.
Scott McLean:I saw videos from those and they were not good. They did not sound good or look good. Scheduled for early 2022, these dates were ultimately canceled due to unforeseen circumstances related to covid abundance of caution for working and attending and attending those shows the ones I saw he was at a club somewhere and it just wasn't good. You can go find them on youtube. So, yeah, so it, that's it. I got through the show, started off rough. Haven't done it in three weeks. Things get rusty, you know, but I'm back and I'll be here next week and maybe I'll do some more music news next week. Uh, we'll see. Maybe Jack will show up and we'll do music news together. I don't know. I don't know, but I kind of like doing the music news. So maybe that's a rabbit hole. I will start traveling down, but let me get back on my regular screen. Uh, let me see, oh, corporate gig. Uh, yeah, where, uh, where, vegas, perry david's corporate day, april. Yay, a microphone, okay.
Scott McLean:Well, everybody, as I always say, thank you for watching, thanks for listening. If you like it, shared if you didn't like it. Well, thanks for watching for one hour and three minutes, or listening for one hour and three minutes, although the first five minutes were a disaster. But I don't care. After 177 shows.
Scott McLean:It's not that I don't care. I just have come to the conclusion that this shit is going to happen. Sometimes this is what happens. I just have come to the conclusion that this shit is going to happen. Sometimes this is what happens. I've said this from the beginning. When you do live streaming, shit just happens, unexpected shit happens, and it's easier if you have a team of people that handle this shit and you're just the personality. But I am the team and I am the personality, big personality, big, larger than life. That's me. Anyway. Every all right, as I always say during this show, for you, to quote my favorite artist, morrissey the pleasure, the privilege is mine and I will be back next thursday night at seven o'clock live. Find it on youtube. Whatever you uh, whatever you want to do all right see you later.
